Restarting Your Passion for Interior Design: A Journey Back to Creativity (a guide after a break)

Life is a whirlwind of events – from having children and moving countries to career shifts and personal burnout. Amidst these changes, the vibrant, creative passions of our youth, such as interior design, often take a backseat.

Yet, there comes a moment when the nostalgia of transforming spaces, the vivid whirl of colors, and the joy of creation call us back. If you find yourself looking at others thriving in interior design and wondering, “What if?”, know that it's entirely possible to return to your first love after a long break.

And remember, you are not alone.

Making the Decision to Return

The first step is the simplest, yet often the hardest: decide. Embrace the beginner’s mindset with open arms, ready to relearn and rediscover the craft from scratch. Don't worry about the outcomes just yet. Just decide to dive back in.

How to Dive Back Into Interior Design

Returning to interior design after a hiatus doesn’t have to be daunting. Here’s a roadmap to ease your transition and set you up for success:

1. Assess Your Skills

Are you starting from scratch, or are you just a bit rusty? It's crucial to honestly assess where you stand. Depending on your assessment, you might want to enroll in courses, seek one-on-one coaching, or devour books and online resources to rebuild your foundational knowledge.

2. Portfolio Time

Building or refreshing your portfolio can seem overwhelming, but it's essential. I’m currently planning an event to assist with just that—so stay tuned and make sure to follow for updates!

3. Network

Announce your return to the world of interior design. You never know who might lead you to your next big opportunity. Attend industry events, engage in online forums, and connect with professionals and enthusiasts alike.

4. Start Small

Begin by redesigning a small corner of your home or even a friend’s. Digital makeovers count too! Document your process with before-and-after photos to enhance your portfolio. This not only shows your skill but also your progress and dedication.

5. Specialize

If you have a passion for specific areas like kitchens, make that your niche. Deep dive into everything about kitchen design—materials, layouts, the latest appliances, and the most efficient designs.

6. Take Baby Steps

It might seem like a mountain to climb, but start with small, manageable steps. There's no better time to start than today. Imagine where you could be a year from now if you start today!

7. Coaching

As an experienced coach for interior designers, I’m here to offer guidance and support. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your skills, coaching can provide you with personalized advice and strategies.

Did you know? that I over 1:1 coaching for Interior Designers?

8. Be Yourself

It's Never Too Late

Let's restart this journey together. Returning to what you love is not just a possibility, but a pathway filled with growth, fulfillment, and joy. Best of luck on your creative revival in interior design!
